Remove Salary History Requests from Your NYS Employment Application in Business and at Work

Because of my profession, I tend to be interested in documents (electronic and hard-copy) that most folks take for granted and/or consider mundane – such as employment applications. Actually, employment applications are important compliance documents which in turn must meet New York state and Federal employment compliance standards.

FYI: January 6, 2020, a new salary history ban took effect in New York state. (New York’s Albany County previously enacted a county-wide salary history ban on December 17, 2017).

While most employers generally know about the new salary history ban, they may continue to use outdated employment applications that still ask (for example) job applicants’ beginning and ending wage rate for each job they’ve worked, e.g., their salary history – which is now not compliant.

Have you removed the salary history sections / questions from your NYS employment application, in business and at work?
